What Should We Do About the Increasing Number of Students with Mental Health Issues in Schools?

The number of children and young people struggling with mental health issues is steadily increasing each year. This growing concern not only affects their academic performance and social relationships but also has a significant impact on their peers, teachers, and the overall classroom environment. Recognizing the warning signs that indicate a student may need additional support is crucial. What symptoms should parents and educators be aware of? What tools and strategies can help teachers provide effective support? What responsibilities do schools have in addressing these challenges, and how do they fit into the broader mental health care system?

To help answer these questions, the HospiEdu Foundation has developed the book From Hospital to School 2. – Handbook for Teachers to Support Children with Mental Disorders This resource offers practical guidance and evidence-based solutions for educators and parents navigating these challenges.

For the past 10 years, HospiEdu has been committed to ensuring that every school-aged child in Hungary facing long-term medical needs or mental health difficulties receives the educational rehabilitation they need. To achieve this, the Foundation has built a comprehensive support system that unites key stakeholders—including doctors, teachers, social workers, parents, and peers—creating a strong network around affected children. We believe that by working together, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all students, regardless of the challenges they face.

A key element of our work involves training university student volunteers who provide academic support to children during their rehabilitation, helping them stay on track with their studies. Additionally, we share our expertise through specialized teacher training programs across Hungary, equipping educators with the necessary knowledge and tools to successfully reintegrate students with chronic illnesses or mental health conditions into the classroom.

To further support this mission, we publish professional methodology books that combine academic research with practical strategies, ensuring that teachers and caregivers have access to effective, evidence-based approaches for helping children in need.

Thanks to the HOPE Board, HospiEdu was able to create the English version of the book. At the upcoming HOPE Congress in Dublin, Monika Tóthné Almássy, the leader of HospiEdu, will present it in a poster presentation.

We have a surprise for you! You will find your very own copy in your conference bag.

Thank you once again to HOPE! See you in Dublin in May!

Until then, if you have any questions, visit our website or reach out to me.
