About Speaker | ||||
Caleb Jones, HSS Liaison Teacher. Currently with Hospital School Services (HSS), Australia as the Paediatric Rehabilitation Team’s Liaison Teacher at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, Caleb works collaboratively with the health team, parents and schools to support young people whose physical and mental health presents challenges to their continued education and associated transitions to school. Having enjoyed being a part of the HSS team since 2000, he has also had the pleasure of working with other hospital school teams in London; including Chelsea Community Hospital School, Evelina Hospital School and the Bethlem & Maudsley Hospital School’s Snowsfields Adolescent Unit.
During his career, Caleb has worked in both Australia and the UK as a mainstream secondary teacher, hospital school teacher, program coordinator, acting Deputy Principal, consultant in education service development and, as a Liaison Teacher, has specialised in adolescent medicine, diabetes, respiratory, cardiac, rehabilitation and mental health services. Caleb is a trainer in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and qualified to support adolescents in career development. He also forged the partnership between HSS and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra to develop the Hospital Orchestra Project, a first in Western Australia.
Over the course of his experience in health settings, Caleb has particularly focussed on strengthening young people’s connections to their enrolled schools and taking every opportunity to see they make a successful and timely return to school. -----------------

Partnership with Education: What Value to Rehabilitation and Mental Health Services?
Collaborative practices are now well documented as increasing effectiveness and efficiency in response to service needs (Miller & Ahmad, 2000). HSS is part of the Department of Education Western Australia and provides education support to both public and private school students whose physical and/or mental health currently prevents them from successfully participating in their usual school, college or alternative education program. For inpatients and outpatients with rehabilitation and mental health needs referred to HSS, liaison with schools and families promotes and supports consistent communication between student, family, school and health service. It also provides a bridge for the school to access the specialist knowledge of the health team and for that team in turn to better understand the challenges the students is facing in the regular school setting. This presentation will describe the education services available to patients from rehabilitation and mental health services in Western Australia. |
