Migration, Multilingualism and Medical Needs – Pedagogics for the 21st Century
(10th HOPE Congress from 10th to 13th May 2016 in Vienna)

This Congress increases the professionalism of all pedagogues teaching children and young people in hospital treatment and thus contributes to a hitherto neglected area. The theme of the conference is migration and multilingualism with a focus on ‘Education for disease’. The speakers and workshop leaders are from diverse disciplines and will illuminate this topic from their perspectives.

Our students not only bring many languages with them, but also their cultures, different perceptions of disease and, in some cases, another way of dealing with the disease and the hospital. Again, this is a challenge for all who work with pupils and their families in the hospital and will be discussed at the Congress.

The Congress, which runs from 10 to 13 May, 2016 in the “Kardinal König Haus”, Vienna, will be an exceptional training event for all Austrian and international hospital teachers and will train these pedagogues support pupils with medical needs in hospital, from immigrant backgrounds and speaking native languages other than the official language of schooling. A focussed training session has never been held to this extent before for hospital teachers on this topic, which is a central challenge of our time and society.
